Summer Tour

O' Smokey: 81' VW diesel— so far so good.

1st Destination: Knoxville

Timed my arrival in Knoxville to coincide with my cousin Mark’s annual 4th of July block party. This is the 10th. I’ve been invited every year. About time I made one.

Travel: Ol’ Smokey

Drove one of the back ways over the mountains— up through Boone and over to Johnson City. It was pretty and pleasant and took about as long as going the expressway with a lot less traffic.

The primary motivation for the route is that my 81′ VW pick up is not a good mountain climber. Beyond a certain grade, I must just drop down to 2nd gear and burn a lot of oil and I didn’t want to get run over by a semi-truck on the main route.

Music: Karaoke

Chicken Wing Cook-Off: 1st & 2nd Place

At my cousin Mark’s house in Knoxville, I learned that they weren’t having a band this year. Instead, the plan was to try karaoke. He showed me a tiny home karaoke machine that they planned to use.

I said ‘No. That won’t do.” Told Mark we needed a PA and volunteered to handle it. The PA came from All Occasions Rental and I used my own karaoke software and 10k songs left over from my American Legion project in Sanford a couple years ago.

The weather was perfect and the karaoke was a big hit. Everyone liked it better than having a band.

Producing Karaoke Tunes!

1st Tune: More Than A Name On The Wall

Modern Karaoke

I’ve been doing a pretty good karaoke show for a couple years. It’s all computerized now!  No more big cases of CDs to lug around and no more having to physically search through titles and cue songs in a player— it’s all handled by software.  It’s very cool. Also have a pretty good set up with mixer board, PA, monitors, various types of mics, and even ‘pitch-correction’ to help singers sound their best.  I can record performances and even make videos of singers— all with the same computers that run the show. If a venue has WiFi and a singer wants a song that’s available from the online store, for a couple bucks I can download it on the fly and they can sing it right away!

Homebaked with Professional appearance

Home ‘Baked’ Karaoke

But what if a song isn’t available. I love a song that was done by the Statler Brothers, and more recently by Vincent and Dailey, called ‘More Than A Name On The Wall’. I’ve searched and searched for a karaoke version to buy, but there just isn’t one out there. So after some further investigation, I figured out that I could make one myself! To do it required 4 different kinds of software. 1st, I ripped the song into iTunes. 2nd, I opened the song file in GarageBand where I’d already downloaded a plugin called VoxReducer II . The voice reducer does exactly what it says, though not completely. And I was in kind of a hurry to see if I could do it, so I didn’t play around much with the settings. I think I can get more of the vocals out with some more experimentation.

3rd, the song file was imported into iKaraoke TunePrompter. This is a cool little package that lets you import or type in the lyrics (I imported cause I could save time). Using the space bar, you ‘click’ to mark where the next word goes as the song plays. OK, I admit, that took a little practice, but by the 3rd try I was doing it. 4th thing was baking the whole production into a movie. I use kJams karaoke software to run my show. I’m pretty sure its the best: kJams.com. Downloaded a plugin for it called ‘Producer’ that lets you add the titles and refine the look before baking the movie. So now there’s no karaoke I can’t get. As a musician, I could even record a tune in GarageBand and add the moving text to the audio file and bake that!

Coming Soon!

You are probably wondering what could be next. I’m working on a way to have a wireless local net running at my shows. Anyone with a laptop or phone browser will be able to search my 10,000 song library, select songs to sing, insert their songs into the rotation, and adjust their preferences (ie. key and tempo) and favorites themselves! kJams remembers you and your preferences, so there is no need to search again next time for songs you’ve already sung. Just sign in and click on your favorites. How cool is that? And there is no such thing as songbooks anymore. Song are searched for via a browser. Any new songs are instantly available in the list— no reprinting— no wasted paper— and best of all, a lot less stuff to carry to the show!

Change in Plans

Three weeks ago, the Moose Lodge in Sanford asked me to put together a show for an event on Thursday the 18th of June.  Tim Glasson said he’d like doing that, so I committed and the Moose has on their published calendar and is advertising it.

They have in the past paid bluegrass bands for shows on Friday nights.  I could never do one of thse because I’m already gigging with my karaoke on Fridays.

Last night Tim told me that he forgot that he will be in Texas on the 18th.  I’m in a bit of a bind.

Music

Last week, my bluegrass band played the Home Builder’s BBQ in Southern Pines.  It was outside under a big tent.  There was also a BBQ competition.  I enjoyed that.  The Home Builders passed the hat for the music and sent me home with the leftover beer!

Tonight (Wed) and Friday I do karaoke which is still going good.  I keep expecting it to peter out, but new folks keep coming in and old friends keep coming back.

Bucky Better

Bucky’s leg is still hurt— an old injury from spring of 2004, but this re injury was pretty bad this time. When she re injured it in early 2005, the vet said it would get better, but that she’d never be the same.  I started putting glucosamine on her food and after a few weeks she did get better and even stopped limping. This time she was really dragging ass for a couple days and couldn’t get in and out of the house or the Prairie Schooner.

Usually she rides with me everywhere I go, but I’ve had to leave her in the garage on a blanket with her big Stuffy Bear she likes to sleep with.  She has hardly wanted to get up at all.  I’ve been carrying her out to do her business.

Just when I thought it might be time to put her to sleep—  she got up off the blanket in the garage and came waddling out to greet me when I drove up.  Since then, she has slowly gotten better.  Bucky is still limping, but she is negotiating steps and most importantly, she is back to being a happy dog.

Still No Car

Car?  Still not running.  Nothing like do-it-yourself optimism!  Pretty sure I’ve tracked the problem down to the engine computer— something some of the repair books don’t even show!  Imagine that?  And the darn thing is nearly impossible to get at.  But I have and I’ve ordered a replacement.  I did a lot of testing and also consulted with whomever I could so I’m pretty sure this is the final trouble.  If it is not I shall be quite discouraged.

Computer Upgrade

Ran out of room on my laptop drive. Between pictures and karaoke, it ate ti all up. I need to have the karaoke on the laptop so I don’t have to carry extra drives, power supplies, and back up power supplies. Swapped out the original drive 120gb drive in my laptop for a 500 gb unit.  Spent the last few days putting things like my mail accounts back in order.  It’s been traumatic switching everything over: passwords, serial numbers, eMail files, bookmarks, signatures, working files, authorizations— phew.  I really needed the larger drive, but underestimated the scope of the changeover.  A pleasant surprise was how much the cost of the drives has come down!  The one I bought was $0.24/gb delivered!

Weather

In the 70s yesterday.  Today 60° and we are waiting on a snow storm.

Car Troubles

An unpleasant surprise came last week when my car went kaputnik on the way back from Sam’s in Fayetteville.  The chip I thought was bad in fact tested bad, but replacing it didn’t get ‘er going again. Hmmm.  Don’t want to fix stuff that isn’t broken.  When it warms up the end of the week, I’ll start at the fuse box and go through it with a meter and a ‘hot-or-not’.

Meanwhile, I’m driving my little 4 cylinder diesel pick up truck.  It isn’t as comfortable as the car, but the mileage it gets more than makes up for the differences in fuel prices.

Losing Friends

I hear of a friend passing now and then, but mostly I learn about deaths when I return to Ypsi— and the longer I’m gone, the more likely it is— this time I’ve been absent a year.  It’s weird going back because sometimes the blows are big, so I end up grieving, but it’s all old news to everyone else.  I guess the price of longevity is ever more frequent heartache as our friends and family go on before us…

Depression

Seems like no one wants to say it, but it looks from here like the U.S. is in an economic depression.  They happen.  It’s part of man’s boom and bust nature.  Someday our civilization will go the same way— all before have.  Anyway, credit was at the heart of the 1929 bust.  In 1999, the veto proof republican congress was lobbied to repeal the 1933 Glass-Steagal act that prevented banks from commingling their activities with insurance and investments.  At that time, they also deregulated the banks (remember? It was unregulated margin selling that brought the financial system down in 1929).  In 1999, there were credible warnings that what was being done would lead to another crash.  Well, it only took 9 years.  The actual instrument that brought down investment banking (an illegal combination before 99′) is called a ‘credit default swap’.  Now, all those giant unregulated investment banks are out of business— but the laws that created them haven’t changed.

In the bigger world, as long as the gasoline and electricity stay on, and there is some food in the stores, I think our civilization will get through the current phase more or less in tack.  And some good changes can come of it all.

The Warranty Expires Soon

I am still house sitting in North Carolina.  No one is looking or buying houses.

A fellow named Garcia told me a woman named Rosa is opening a barbershop next door.  Her current location is in the strip mall across from Ham’s at Lee/3rd and Honer Blvd.

MacBook Pro

I’m just hanging around here getting things done using my computer.  I need to get a bunch of work accomplished so I can take my computer in for some warranty work.  The extended warranty expires this month.

Being without it will be traumatic, though I have taken those 2 old G4 laptops and made one good one, but it doesn’t have PhotoShop or Dreamweaver for doing eBay listings… But I can use the old G4 for my phone, eMail, writing, and managing eBay listing once they are posted.

Karaoke Sound Management

A New Year

A lot of folks around Sanford had New Year’s Day parties with lots of food and the bowl games for entertainment.  I didn’t go to any of those.  I like to start the year doing something I hope to accomplish during the coming year—  so I worked on my writing project— something I did last New Year’s too.

Managing Karaoke

14 Channel EuroRack Mixer

Most songs that you can think of are available as karaoke— Xmas, barber shop, religious.  Some of my most popular karaoke songs are gospel tunes.  Most people wouldn’t think that could be case in a tavern setting.

My computer doesn’t have a competition karaoke feature, but I think a competition could be fun. Software compares how closely the singer matches the melody and the most accurate wins. The competition idea reenforces what I try to tell folks: that there is no such thing as good or bad voices— there’s only in-key and out-of-key.  I also like the idea of leaving the judging of a singing competition up to a computer and avoid any bad feelings between people.

Most of my personal karaoke singing is harmony.  To get people to sing, I frequently offer to sing with them.  I also encourage a lot of groups, what I call ‘choir’ singing.   I have quite a few singers now with whom I have developed good harmonies.  Another advantage of group singing is that folks get more turns. The joy of singing seems to be there whether solo or in a group.

I also play harmonica for a few tunes. Helps add another dimension. It has occurred to me that musicians could come in and play along with karaoke. And I’ve heard of a type of show called ‘live-band karaoke’, but I’m not sure exactly what it comprises.

For microphones, I’m currently using 4 wireless mics and 2 good wired mics (one for me and one for really good singers).  I have a few other mics that I can use with my PA if needed.  I run each mic through a Eurorack mixer (state of the art 1990), then run separate outs to the main speakers and the monitors.

Digital Harmony & Pitch Correction

Having 2 mixes is in where lies a big part of the art of very the sckaraoke! On the front mix I have the music and singers, but I also run reverb and can switch on pitch-correction. I’m also careful not to let the front mix get too loud— I want the audience to be able to socialize.

In the monitor mix, I don’t run any effects like reverb and pitch-correction. I don’t want the singers to think they sound better than they do! I also run more volume in the monitors because most singers really like it loud. That also leaves me the option of turning up or down the front vocals.

I have a lot of tricks to help people sound better, but if they are really bad, I just turn them down so I don’t run my audience out the door.  Unlike some karaoke shows that only attract singers, I’ve been drawing a pretty good audience too.

Using the ‘Online Karaoke Store’

Online Store choices for 'Summertime

Everything is still on hold with the house.  The house is for sale, no one is looking at the place.  So I’m continuing to write everyday and doing 2 karaoke shows each week.

Hey, I’ve just added a new feature to my karaoke.  In the past, when folks have wanted a song, I’ve been putting it on a list along with their name, and then when I get enough songs, the American Legion has been ordering a disk of the new tunes. The problem is that there is a wait to get the songs and people often forget about the songs they wanted. Now I’ve got a better way of buying songs.

My MacBook Pro has WiFi and the American Legion venue here in Sanford now has wireless internet access. Recently the developer of the kJams karaoke software I’m using for my shows added an ‘online store’ feature. So now if someone wants a new song, they give me a couple $ and I go right on line and get it.  The performer can be singing it in about 5 minutes.

Even at a couple bucks, the songs generally cost a lot more than buying a set from a karaoke publisher and having a disk mailed out to us, but for those that want to use the online store feature, the gratification is immediate. And it works well for me because I’m not paying for songs.

Pretty soon I’m hoping to have a set up where people with browsers on their cell phones will be able to log in to my kJams wirelessly and pick their owns songs that will then go automatically into the play list queue. The kJams software already rotates automatically from singer to singer and remembers what everyone performs. So folks returning from previous nights don’t need to look up their favorite songs again— they can just choose from their history and stored favorites. How cool is that?

A so a New Year begins…

Did a karaoke gig for N.Y.’s Eve.  Making $ sure beats spending ‘em and I had just as much fun.  Any more, if I’m not getting paid for N.Y. I just as soon stay home and write.

1981 VW Rabbit Diesel Pick Up

Things are still up in the air here in Sanford.  I’m sorting through my belongings trying to get rid of things I don’t need.  Can’t believe how much junk I’ve got in my schooner that I never use— sentimental items most of it, like books from my grandparents house and things from the farm. My general rule is that if I haven’t used something in over a year, I don’t really need it.  So far, I haven’t been able to get off any tools, but I’m working up to it. Even listed my little diesel truck for sale— wait a minute, I use that!

I’d like to finish up here, stash the schooner somewhere, and head for TX in my car for a visit— stopping along the way to see friends and family.  ’Bout the time it would get hot there, it would be a good time to migrate toward Traverse City for the summer.

Meanwhile, Todd likes having someone here, and it’s also helping me because I’m getting a lot of writing done.  Figure I might as well ride this horse as long as it lasts because it can’t last much longer (seems like we used to say that about the farm Ç;-)   I know better than to ever say never, but I can’t visualize myself being here for another hot summer.  I’ve got itchy feet!

12.9.6 Karaoke & WebSite
I just finished computerizing a whole karaoke system. With iTunes, I’ve stored 45k songs on my computer. Now I have 8k worth of karaoke music with all the graphics! Graphics were the hard part. I am inventing a show I think I’ll call *Karaoke & More*, where I’ll invite people to sing, but also to bring instruments and play along. An additional feature of the show will be the ability to record a jam session and burn it instantly to a DVD or CD.

Another current adventure is learning how to design my own new web site. Learning is still fun. Feels good to, as Capt. Kihm would say “blow some dust of the chip” and take a ride on the bell-curve!

I suppose my biggest accomplishment of the year has been my improvement as a photographer. One purpose of my web site will be to publish a portfolio. With it I want to try and get some gigs and see if I can’t cultivate a new income stream Ç;-)
